A few weeks ago at the Cloisters, I paused at Robert Campin's spectacular Mérode Altarpiece, which stirred up a formerly cast-off thought about this palette. The Annunciation has been my favorite biblical depiction in paintings since Art History 101, in part because the interpretations within this two hundred year span are so varied. From the Ghent Altarpiece to Jacopo Pontormo's Annunciation in Florence's Capponi Chapel, the colors of archangel Gabriel's wings are extraordinary in their vibrance. Fra Filippo Lippi imagines them with gilded eyespots, like a peacock's tail feathers.
